Plates are priced by weight, shipped by weight and checked by weight at the buyer's gate. Yet a surprising number of quotations still carry wrong plate weights. Mastering steel plate weight calculation takes five minutes and saves you from under-pricing, wrong freight estimates and disputes.

The basic formula

Weight is volume multiplied by density:

Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³)

For mild steel (density 7.85 g/cm³), this becomes:

Weight (kg) = L (m) × W (m) × T (mm) × 7.85

The trick is the units. When thickness is in mm and length and width are in metres, multiplying by density in g/cm³ gives kilograms directly.

Worked example: MS plate

A plate of 2500 × 1250 × 10 mm:

  • Area = 2.5 × 1.25 = 3.125 m²
  • Weight = 3.125 × 10 × 7.85 = 245.3 kg

Another way to remember it: one square metre of 1 mm steel weighs 7.85 kg. So 1 m² of 10 mm plate weighs 78.5 kg.

Density of common plate materials

Material Density (g/cm³) kg per m² per mm
Mild / carbon steel 7.85 7.85
Stainless steel 304 7.93 7.93
Stainless steel 316 7.98 7.98
Duplex 2205 7.80 7.80
Aluminium 2.70 2.70
Copper 8.96 8.96
Brass 8.50 8.50

Using 7.85 for stainless steel under-states the weight by about 1–2%. On a 20-tonne order, that is a few hundred kilograms — enough to wipe out your margin.

Imperial units

For buyers in the USA, plate weight is often given in pounds per square foot. One inch thick steel plate weighs about 40.8 lb/ft². So 1/2" plate is about 20.4 lb/ft². Use our unit converter to switch between kg, lb, mm and inches.

Chequered and perforated plates

  • Chequered (floor) plates have raised patterns that add weight. Use the mill's published weight per m² rather than the flat-plate formula.
  • Perforated plates weigh less. Multiply the solid weight by (1 – open area %).

Circles and cut shapes

For a circular blank: Weight (kg) = π/4 × D² (m²) × T (mm) × 7.85.

Example: a 600 mm diameter, 20 mm thick disc = 0.7854 × 0.36 × 20 × 7.85 = 44.4 kg.

For flange blanks and rings, subtract the inner circle area. Remember that buyers often pay for the gross plate consumed, not just the net shape — state clearly whether your price is on finished weight or input weight.

Theoretical vs actual weight

Mills roll plates within thickness tolerances, so actual weight can be slightly above or below theoretical weight. Agree in your quotation whether billing is on:

  • theoretical weight (calculated), or
  • actual weight (weighbridge).

For export, packing lists normally show both net and gross weight per bundle.

Common mistakes in plate weight calculations

Most plate weight errors come from a handful of avoidable slips:

  • Mixing units. Entering length in millimetres and thickness in metres gives answers that are off by a factor of a thousand. Keep length and width in metres and thickness in millimetres.
  • Using the wrong density. Stainless, duplex, aluminium and copper all differ from carbon steel. Always pick the density for the actual grade.
  • Ignoring cutting loss. Profile-cut parts waste material between shapes. If the buyer pays only for finished weight, build the scrap cost into your rate.
  • Forgetting packing. Export shipments add wooden skids, steel strapping and wrapping. Packing lists must show net and gross weights separately.
  • Rounding too early. Round only the final figure. Rounding each step on large orders can add or remove tens of kilograms.

A short internal checklist — or software that calculates weight automatically — prevents these errors on every quotation.

Using weight in pricing

Once weight is right, pricing is simple: price = weight × rate per kg + processing + GST + freight. Our steel price calculator handles GST and conversions. For multi-item enquiries mixing plates, pipes and fittings, QuoteMitra calculates weights line by line and builds a professional quotation automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is the weight of a 10 mm MS plate per square metre?

78.5 kg per square metre.

How do I calculate stainless steel plate weight?

Use the same formula with density 7.93 (304) or 7.98 (316): L (m) × W (m) × T (mm) × density.

What is the standard size of an MS plate?

Common sizes include 2500 × 1250 mm, 2500 × 6300 mm and 2000 × 6300 mm, but mills supply many widths and lengths.

Why is my weighbridge weight different from the calculation?

Thickness tolerance, mill scale, moisture and packing material can all cause small differences.

Key takeaways

  • Weight (kg) = L (m) × W (m) × T (mm) × density.
  • 1 m² of 1 mm mild steel weighs 7.85 kg.
  • Use the correct density for stainless and other metals.
  • Agree theoretical or actual weight basis in every quotation.

Accurate weights are the foundation of accurate prices — and accurate prices are what keep buyers coming back.
