A buyer in Houston asks for ASTM A106 Grade B. A buyer in Hamburg wants EN 10216-2 P235GH. A contractor in Mumbai specifies IS 1239. All three may be looking for similar steel pipe — but each speaks a different language. Understanding steel standards is one of the most valuable skills an exporter can have. It decides whether you can quote quickly, supply correctly and pass inspection.

Why standards matter so much

A standard defines everything a buyer needs to trust a product: chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, tolerances, testing and marking. When a buyer writes a standard on a purchase order, the material must meet it in full. "Equivalent" is not enough unless the buyer accepts it in writing.

The three systems most exporters meet

ASTM (and ASME)

ASTM International standards are used in the USA and widely across the Middle East, Asia and Africa — especially in oil & gas. ASME adopts many ASTM material standards with an "SA" prefix (for example ASME SA-106) for pressure equipment.

Naming style: a letter for the category (A for ferrous metals, B for non-ferrous), a number, and a grade.

  • ASTM A106 Gr. B — seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service
  • ASTM A53 Gr. B — welded and seamless pipe for general use
  • ASTM A312 TP316L — seamless and welded stainless steel pipe
  • ASTM A105 — forged carbon steel flanges and fittings
  • ASTM A240 — stainless steel plate and sheet

EN (European Norms)

EN standards are used across Europe and by many international EPC contractors. Grade names often tell you the use and strength directly.

  • S355J2 — S = structural, 355 = minimum yield strength in MPa, J2 = impact tested at −20 °C
  • P235GH — P = pressure purposes, 235 = minimum yield, GH = elevated temperature
  • 1.4404 — the EN numeric name for stainless 316L (X2CrNiMo17-12-2)

Common EN product standards include EN 10025 (structural steels), EN 10216 (seamless pressure tubes), EN 10217 (welded pressure tubes) and EN 10204 (inspection documents).

IS (Indian Standards)

IS standards from the Bureau of Indian Standards cover the Indian market and are often requested by buyers in neighbouring countries and the Gulf for projects with Indian contractors.

  • IS 1239 — MS tubes for water, gas and general use (Light, Medium, Heavy)
  • IS 2062 — hot rolled structural steel (E250, E350 etc.)
  • IS 3589 — large welded pipes for water and sewage

Many steel products sold in India also fall under BIS Quality Control Orders, which require BIS certification for domestic sale.

Common equivalents (approximate)

Use ASTM EN IS
Structural plate A36 / A572 Gr. 50 S275 / S355 IS 2062 E250 / E350
Pressure pipe A106 Gr. B P265GH —
Stainless 304L A312 TP304L 1.4307 —
Stainless 316L A312 TP316L 1.4404 —

These are approximate equivalents, not substitutes. Chemistry ranges, test temperatures and tolerances differ. Always confirm with the buyer before offering an alternative standard.

Dual and multi-certified material

Many mills supply material that meets two standards at once — for example ASTM A106 Gr. B / A53 Gr. B / API 5L Gr. B pipe, or 316/316L stainless. Multi-certified stock helps traders serve buyers in different regions from the same inventory. Make sure the mill test certificate clearly lists every standard the material satisfies.

How to quote standards correctly

  1. Copy the buyer's standard exactly, including edition if they give one.
  2. Quote the grade, not just the standard. "ASTM A312" alone is incomplete; "ASTM A312 TP316L" is correct.
  3. Mention supplementary requirements such as NACE MR0175, impact testing or hydrotest if requested.
  4. Flag deviations clearly — never hide an alternative standard in small print.
  5. Match the certificate to the quote. Your MTC must show the same standard and grade.

MTCMitra has a built-in library of ASTM, ASME, API, IS and ISO grades, so chemical and mechanical limits fill in automatically and out-of-range values are flagged before printing.

Show standards on your website

Buyers search by standard and grade. A product page titled "ASTM A312 TP316L Seamless Pipe" will attract far better enquiries than "SS Pipe". List every standard you supply, with equivalent grades and downloadable size charts. Read more in keyword research for metal products.

Frequently asked questions

Can I supply EN material against an ASTM order?

Only with the buyer's written approval. Even close equivalents differ in chemistry limits, testing and tolerances, so a substitution without approval can lead to rejection.

What is UNS numbering?

The Unified Numbering System gives each alloy a code, such as S31603 for 316L. Buyers in the US often use UNS numbers alongside ASTM grades, so include them on product pages.

Do I need BIS certification to export?

BIS certification under Quality Control Orders is mainly about selling in India. Export rules depend on the product and destination, so check current requirements with your export council or customs broker.

Which standard should my website list first?

List the standard your target buyers use most — ASTM for the US and the Gulf, EN for Europe — and show equivalents underneath.

Key takeaways

  • ASTM dominates the US, Gulf and oil & gas; EN dominates Europe; IS covers India.
  • Equivalents are approximate — confirm before substituting.
  • Quote and certify the exact standard and grade the buyer asked for.

Speak the buyer's standard fluently and you remove one of the biggest barriers to winning export orders.
