HDPE pipe has become a standard choice for water supply, irrigation, gas distribution, mining and industrial lines. But HDPE enquiries use their own language — SDR, PN, PE100, PE80 — and quoting the wrong combination means a pipe that cannot handle the pressure or costs far more than needed. This guide explains SDR and PN in simple terms.

What SDR means

SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) is the ratio of the pipe's outside diameter to its wall thickness:

SDR = OD ÷ wall thickness

  • A lower SDR means a thicker wall and higher pressure rating.
  • A higher SDR means a thinner wall, lighter pipe and lower pressure rating.

For example, a 110 mm pipe at SDR 11 has a wall of about 10 mm (110 ÷ 11). At SDR 17 the wall is about 6.6 mm.

HDPE pipes are sized by outside diameter (20 mm to 1,000 mm and above), so the OD stays fixed and the wall changes with SDR — similar to how steel pipe schedules work.

What PN means

PN (Pressure Nominal) is the maximum allowable operating pressure in bar for water at 20 °C over a 50-year design life. PN10 means 10 bar; PN16 means 16 bar.

PE80 vs PE100

HDPE material is classified by its Minimum Required Strength (MRS):

  • PE80 — MRS 8.0 MPa
  • PE100 — MRS 10.0 MPa

PE100 is stronger, so the same SDR gives a higher pressure rating — or the same pressure can be achieved with a thinner, lighter pipe. PE100 is now the most common material for pressure pipes.

How SDR and material give PN

The relationship is:

PN = (20 × MRS) ÷ (C × (SDR − 1))

where C is the design coefficient (commonly 1.25 for water). This gives typical ratings:

SDR PE100 (PN, bar) PE80 (PN, bar)
33 5 4
26 6.3 5
21 8 6.3
17 10 8
13.6 12.5 10
11 16 12.5
9 20 16
7.4 25 20

Values are rounded to standard PN steps. Always confirm with the governing standard and the manufacturer's tables.

Temperature matters

PN ratings apply at 20 °C. At higher temperatures, HDPE loses strength, so the allowable pressure must be reduced using derating factors from the standard. Hot industrial water lines may need a lower SDR than you would expect.

Common standards

  • ISO 4427 — PE pipes for water supply (used internationally)
  • EN 12201 — European water supply standard
  • IS 4984 — Indian standard for HDPE water pipes
  • IS 14333 — Indian standard for HDPE sewerage pipes
  • ISO 4437 / EN 1555 — PE pipes for gas

Choosing the right pipe

  1. Know the working pressure and add surge allowance.
  2. Check the fluid temperature and apply derating.
  3. Choose PE100 or PE80 — PE100 for most pressure work.
  4. Pick the SDR that meets the pressure with a safety margin.
  5. Consider installation — trenchless methods may need a thicker wall.
  6. Confirm the standard the project specifies.

How to quote HDPE pipe

A complete description:

HDPE pipe PE100, 160 mm OD, SDR 11 (PN16), ISO 4427, black with blue stripes, 12 m straight lengths

Include OD, SDR and PN, material grade, standard, colour, length or coil length, and jointing method (butt fusion or electrofusion fittings).

Jointing methods

HDPE pipes are usually joined by:

  • Butt fusion — pipe ends are heated and pressed together. Common for larger diameters.
  • Electrofusion — fittings with built-in heating wires; useful for repairs and tight spaces.
  • Compression fittings — for small diameters in irrigation and plumbing.
  • Flange adaptors — to connect with valves, pumps and steel pipes.

Always quote compatible fittings with the same SDR or pressure class, and confirm whether the buyer needs fittings, jointing machines or installation support.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lower SDR always better?

Lower SDR gives higher pressure capacity but costs more and reduces the inside diameter. Choose the highest SDR that safely meets the design pressure.

What do blue stripes on HDPE pipes mean?

In many markets, blue stripes indicate potable water service and yellow stripes indicate gas. Local rules vary.

Can HDPE pipes be joined to steel pipes?

Yes, using flange adaptors with backing rings or transition fittings. Make sure flange drilling matches.

How do I calculate HDPE pipe weight?

Use the pipe's OD, wall thickness and HDPE density (about 0.95–0.96 g/cm³), or use our HDPE calculator.

Key takeaways

  • SDR = OD ÷ wall thickness; lower SDR means thicker wall.
  • PN depends on SDR and material (PE80 or PE100).
  • Temperature derating and the right standard complete the selection.
